What is Influenza / Flu?
Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory infection caused by Influenza virus types A and B. Flu vaccines help to prevent influenza infection and reduce the risk of severe complications. Annual influenza vaccines are formulated to protect against the most common circulating strains each year and are recommended for both adults and children.

Common flu symptoms include fever and chills, headache and fatigue, muscle and body aches, sore throat and cough. Some influenza can become severe and life-threatening, particularly in high-risk individuals. Serious complications may include shortness of breath, influenza-related pneumonia, sepsis and respiratory failure.

The flu vaccine takes approximately 2 weeks for the body to develop sufficient immunity. For optimal protection — especially before peak flu seasons or travel — it is important to plan your vaccination early.
Who should be vaccinated?
Influenza vaccination is recommended annually for everyone aged 6 months and above, especially individuals at higher risk of developing severe flu complications. These individuals include:

-
Children aged 6 months to under 5 years, who are more vulnerable to severe influenza
-
Adults aged 65 years and above
-
Pregnant women, as influenza can lead to serious complications for both mother and baby
-
Individuals with chronic medical conditions, including asthma, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, or weakened immune systems
-
Healthcare workers and caregivers, due to increased exposure and risk of transmission
-
Individuals living or working in crowded environments, such as schools, childcare centres, and eldercare facilities
-
Travellers, especially those visiting countries with active influenza circulation
Even healthy adults can develop severe influenza. Vaccination not only protects you but also helps reduce the spread of influenza to vulnerable individuals in the community.
